Bikes are special every day at 69�� (well, except, perhaps, when we’re riding in the rain!), so we’re hard-pressed to think of a way to give bikes even more attention. But we’ll give it the old college try over the next week or so with the campus’s biannual Bike Auction and the ASUCD Bike Barn’s annual “yard” sale.

This year, the yard sale turns into a garage sale in the barn’s center portion, formerly used by Outdoor Adventures. The Bike Barn, which previously occupied the barn’s south end, took over the center portion last year to use as a warehouse and parts room.

NEWS BRIEFS: Stokes named emergency manager

Clement Stokes is the campus’s new director of emergency management and mission continuity. He previously served as director of emergency management at Northwestern University for seven years.

Part of the Safety Services unit, he will work closely with the Event and Crisis Management Team, chaired by the chancellor and provost, as well as emergency officials throughout the region.

Global shift to bicycling could save world trillions of dollars, 10 percent of transport emissions

A dramatic global shift to increased cycling and electric biking, or e-biking, could cut energy use and carbon dioxide emissions from urban transport by up to 10 percent by 2050 compared to current estimates, while saving society nearly $25 trillion. That is according to a report by the University of California, Davis, and the New York-based Institute for Transportation & Development Policy.

The report, “A Global High Shift Cycling Scenario,” takes a comprehensive look at the future of cycling for urban transportation.
