Spring Quarter Snapshot: Motor Parade Celebrates Graduating Interns

In a year like none other, graduating seniors have been impacted in unusual ways — one of the most noticeable being a lack of traditional ceremonies and observances.

So when an email went out to all of Strategic Communications at 69�� announcing, “We are planning a drive-by to celebrate our graduating seniors,” many staffers jumped at the chance to be part of the festivities.

Spring Quarter Snapshot: Trimming the Waste from Home

At the Energy & Engineering Office — part of Facilities Management — a self-described group of “energy enthusiasts” came up with a way to share home energy tips and tricks while they are not in their regular offices.

The “Trim the Waste: Home Edition” began earlier this quarter and features videos from staffers’ homes. They discuss energy saving ideas while showing how-tos from their own thermostats, air filters and solar panels. They also talk about these concepts on a larger, university-wide scale.

Spring Quarter Snapshot: Teams Highlight Their Graduating Student-Athletes

Intercollegiate Athletics will honor its 2019-20 senior class on Aggie Launch Day, an event spanning the department’s website and social media accounts tomorrow morning (June 11) celebrating graduating student-athletes’ “launch” into the world after college.

Throughout the day, Intercollegiate Athletics will celebrate student-athletes' academic success, athletic accomplishments, post-undergraduate plans and highlight its student-athlete resource groups.

Spring Quarter Snapshot: Student-Run Clinic Continues Providing Care

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped health care throughout the region, including at student-run clinics. Some are temporarily closed or providing only essential services while a few, like 69��’ Clínica Tepati are using telehealth to maintain, and even expand, access to care.

“Ironically, the move to telehealth visits has allowed us to offer care seven days a week rather than just once a week for in-person visits,” said clinic director and physician Brenden Tu.

Spring Quarter Snapshot: Law School Forum Centers on Police Violence, Race, Protests

Last week, as protests prompted by the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and other black men and women spread across the nation, the 69�� School of Law held the virtual public forum “Police Violence, Race, and Protest.”

More than 175 people, including King Hall students, faculty, staff and alumni, came online June 3 to express their grief and sadness regarding the most recent examples of systemic violence toward people of color, and discuss what the King Hall community can do to move the fight for justice forward.

“Picture us under the oak tree in Shields Courtyard, with a gentle breeze blowing.” Naomi Janowitz, a professor of religious studies and president of the campus Phi Beta Kappa chapter, sets an imaginary scene on May 27 for about 90 students and family members attending the first-ever online induction ceremony of the campus’ Phi Beta Kappa society.

Though much of the 69�� campus has been quiet over the past few months, the lot west of Shields Library has remained abuzz with construction work on the new Graduate Center at Historic Walker Hall. Scheduled to open later this year, the newly renovated building will promote interdisciplinary interactions and build community by serving students and postdoctoral scholars.
