Fire Department Provides Transportation to Quarantining Students

Student EMTs are helping their fellow students move safely into on-campus quarantine, thanks to a collaboration between the 69�� Fire Department, Student Health and Counseling Services and Student Housing.

Rock Smashes Through Firetruck Windshield

A team of campus firefighters was shaken but unhurt Thursday (Aug. 27) when a rock burst through the windshield of their truck in rural Yolo County.

The crew was traveling on Highway 16 near Guinda as part of their assignment to fight the LNU Lightning Complex when a rock tumbled off a hillside, bounced off the road and went straight through the windshield of Brush Truck 34.

“The cup holder, specifically, was the landing spot,” Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht said.

For Firefighters, ‘Twin’ Paths Led to 69��

They grew up as tennis doubles partners, were co-captains of their college soccer team, went into the same career field, gave birth to daughters in the same four-month span and then had sons within five weeks of each other.

And the only way to tell them apart is the absence of a mole or the color of their wedding rings.

One of 69�� Fire Department’s newest firefighters is Cara Martinez, who has been on the job for one year. Among her co-workers is her identical twin sister Meggie Elledge, who has been here two years.

Fire Department Empowers Campus to ‘Stop the Bleed’ in Emergencies

69�� is joining a national campaign to empower bystanders to help in emergencies that involve uncontrolled bleeding by offering training and installing “Stop the Bleed” kits around campus.

Burglaries in Bainer, Fire Duty in LA

Campus police are investigating a dozen burglaries in Bainer Hall over the last month, in which the culprit or culprits forced open doors to labs and offices during weekends.

Getting into the building was easier, Lt. Bill Beermann said. With no signs of forced entry, officers believe the burglar or burglars got in with a key or through an unlocked door — or someone let them in.

When a call comes in to the 69�� Fire Department, help is only a couple minutes away — and sometimes some of the first responders are students.

At any given time, the department has 15 student firefighters, who live at the station and get firsthand experience going on calls, train with other staff, and, after two years, earn certifications that prepare them to enter the work force.

Police and Fire Test New Tactics in Active-Shooter Drills

With the recent arrival of bright red ballistic vests and ballistic helmets, 69�� firefighters are now equipped with some basic protection that allows them to enter a shooting scene, under police protection, much sooner than before — all in the interests of getting to patients as soon as possible.

NEWS BRIEFS: Free Rides Can’t Be ‘Spared’

So far this year, Unitrans has done its part to “Spare the Air” 19 days, waiving fares for all passengers. Unfortunately, Unitrans can no longer spare the expense and will discontinue the free-ride program from Monday, Aug. 27, through the end of the year.

WILDFIRES: Bear Treated With Fish Skins; Firefighters Return
