LAURELS: Veterinary EMS Team Lauded

The state Emergency Medical Services Authority recently presented a certificate of commendation to the Medical Reserve Corps of 69��’ Veterinary Emergency Response Team, or VERT, recognizing the corps’ response to the Camp Fire.

The Medical Reserve Corps deployed twice to Butte County in connection with the fire that destroyed the town of Paradise last year. The deployments involved 11 faculty members, two registered veterinary technicians and 81 veterinary students (members of the sVERT Club), all of whom volunteered their time.

Natural Reserves Survive County Fire Untouched

The sky has cleared around several 69�� natural reserves after they spent several days in the shadow of the County Fire.

“Crystal-clear at Cahill today,” due to the wind, reserve steward Paul Havemann said Monday (July 9). He works at Stebbins Cold Canyon Natural Reserve near the Cahill Riparian Reserve.

The County Fire sparked June 30 near Guinda and prompted evacuations of researchers from Stebbins and Quail Creek Natural Reserve. The blaze had covered 90,000 acres and been 80 percent contained as of this morning (July 10), Cal Fire reported.

As the County Fire near Guinda ballooned to more than 44,000 acres over the weekend, 69�� faculty, staff and students not only responded to the fire but also took steps to protect one of the university’s natural reserves and safeguard animals.

Saturday afternoon (June 30), a three-person campus fire crew joined the initial attack on the fire in western Yolo County, and has since returned safely — sent back because other crews had arrived from elsewhere in the state, and officials needed to restore coverage in the rest of Yolo County.
