Veterinary School Kicks Off 75th Anniversary Celebration

The 69�� School of Veterinary Medicine kicked off its 75th anniversary last weekend with a host of celebrations and activities. Events started with a luncheon for key donors and guests — including George Puterbaugh from the inaugural Class of 1952. Debbie Wilson, executive director of development, and Mary Croughan, provost and executive vice chancellor, offered heart-felt remarks about the roles the veterinary school has played in their lives.

69�� helped a red-tailed hawk learn to fly again, after the raptor lost some crucial feathers. The bird came in with six broken feathers, and underwent a procedure at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital to have new feathers glued in place.

In 1970, the Apollo 12 crew dodged catastrophe on its way to the moon, Ford rolled out the first Pinto, California re-elected Ronald Reagan governor — and the 69�� School of Veterinary Medicine threw open the doors to its $6 million Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

As the only tertiary, or third-tier, veterinary referral center in California, it quickly drew patients from throughout the state and as far away as Japan.

Veterinary Hospital Resumes Receiving Horse Patients

Following the diagnosis of equine influenza in a horse admitted to the Large Animal Clinic at the 69�� Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, the hospital staff is caring for some flu-positive horses in an isolation unit and limiting its equine appointments to emergencies, critical rechecks and outpatient care.
