69�� is third in the nation among public universities and 12th among all universities for how well it sets its graduates up for financial success in the 2025 WSJ/College Pulse rankings.

From the earliest moments of his childhood, Gary May was building. He recalls spending countless hours assembling structures with Lego bricks and Erector sets and creating imaginary worlds and characters inspired by the comic books he loved reading and collecting.

Football Season Kicks Off This Weekend

The 69�� football team has been hard at work at its fall training camp for the past month, and will officially open the regular season with an away game at UC Berkeley Saturday (Aug. 31).

“We’ve continued to grow as a team and we are getting closer each day to finding out they type of team we are entering the season,” said head coach Tim Plough ’08, who is entering his first season as head coach.

Roger Thompson clapped his hands together. “You’ve got two hours to open. Let’s get to it.”

“Yes, Chef!” Andrea Rivera replied. She turned to a class visitor and whispered: “That’s so they know we heard them, and it’s fun too.”

And with that, Rivera and five other food service workers left their classroom space at dining tables in Latitude and headed toward the dining facility’s kitchen on their way to becoming cooks at 69��.

Arrest Following Kidnapping and Assault

69�� police have arrested a suspect following an assault and kidnapping reported last Monday, Aug. 12. James Garvin surrendered at the 69�� police department at 5 p.m., Aug. 20. He was booked at Yolo County jail on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and assault with great bodily injury.

UPDATED: Fire Crew Returns From Park Fire

Updated 1 p.m. Aug. 19, corrected 2:30 p.m. Aug. 21: Brush Truck 34 and its four 69�� firefighters returned to campus Thursday (Aug. 15), leaving one staffer still contributing to the fight against the Park Fire until he returned Saturday (Aug. 17).

The firefighters aboard Brush Truck 34 were Capt. Kyle Dubs and Firefighters Gerrit Dykzeul, Emmet King and Shawna Mayo; they left campus Aug. 8.

Capt. Steve Dunn returned separately, and had been serving as a strike team leader since Aug. 9.

The new academic year starts in just a few weeks and I look forward to seeing our campuses full of new and returning Aggies.

For many of our students, summer is a popular season to engage in global learning opportunities, and approximately 1,200 students are participating in study abroad programs this year.

IN MEMORIAM: Dan Ransom Remembered as Supportive, Inclusive

Dan Ransom, a staff member celebrated for his selflessness and mentorship and who was described as a devoted father, died July 27. He was 48 years old.

Ransom was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and was one of eight children. He attended high school in the Sacramento area and held several software development and IT positions in the region before joining the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office at 69�� in 2017. In 2020 he joined the School of Veterinary Medicine as director of application development.
