October event takes a sweet look at honey

The many facets of honey, from the beehive to a healthy diet, will be spotlighted Friday, Oct. 21, during a special daylong event at the 69³ΙΘΛ Conference Center.

The event β€œHoney!” will feature honey tastings, a honey-themed lunch and presentations by 69³ΙΘΛ faculty members on the history and merits of honey. Faculty also will talk about why honeybees are in trouble.

The speakers will include bee authorities Eric Mussen, a Cooperative Extension apiculturist; Brian Johnson, an assistant professor; and Norman Gary, a professor emeritus and honeybee showman. All three are from the 69³ΙΘΛ Department of Entomology. Also speaking will be Liz Applegate, author and lecturer for one of the nation’s largest undergraduate nutrition classes, and Professor Emeritus Louis Grivetti, a nutritional geographer, both of the 69³ΙΘΛ Department of Nutrition.

The public event is sponsored by the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, the 69³ΙΘΛ Department of Entomology and the Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts.

Admission is $75 for industry members and the general public; $50 for UC faculty, staff and Friends of the Robert Mondavi Institute; and $25 for UC students.
